Tiny Homes in Ontario

Tiny homes on wheels and on foundations are becoming more and more popular in Ontario in recent years. With the already existing housing shortage aggravated into a crisis by the pandemic, housing prices for both ownership and rentals have shot up.

Toronto and Ottawa have become unaffordable for most homebuyers and small towns in Ontario are seeing an influx of big-city residents, effectively pricing out the small town and rural population from these homes.

Prospective tiny home owners in Ontario have two choices: to permit their tiny home in a municipality, which requires Ontario Building Code and bylaw compliance, or to use it as a Park Model RV in a year-round campground.

Living in a tiny home on a foundation in Ontario is possible in any municipality that doesn't have forbiddingly high minimum square footage requirements and/or in a municipality that allows detached secondary dwellings in backyards of existing homes.

Some municipalities also allow tiny homes on wheels with varying requirements for decks, porches, skirting, and anchoring. There is also the option in Ontario to live in a tiny home in a year-round campground or on a lot you own in an Unorganized Township.
