“Housing-first” community of 75-80 tiny homes to be built in Saint John, NB
The 12 Neighbours concept of tiny home community has been making waves in Eastern Canada. The community, which now encompasses 96 tiny homes in Fredericton, NB, includes a café and an employment training centre and is geared for the under-housed.
Now, a new group of organizations wants to bring a similar concept to Saint John, NB. Like Fredericton’s 12 Neighbours, rents at the new community would be capped at 30 per cent of a person’s income.
The United Way will be the owner and operator of the community once its built, and will be project managing and fundraising for the build.
Marcel LeBrun, the man behind the creation of the 12 Neighbours community in Fredericton, will be advising the Saint John group and Neighbourly Homes, an offshoot of the Fredericton project, will be building all of the homes.
The community is still in early stages and requires a planning committee proposal. Much of its $10M price tag also remains to be fundraised through community efforts.
